I for one love Indian food. It’s so vegetarian-friendly (for the most part) and it’s very flavorful. So news that a very popular Indian (and Thai) spice can help prevent a horrible disease comes as welcome news to me. Check it out: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8080630.stm
Here’s an interesting story about someone who wants to be vegetarian, but can’t fully pull the trigger. He raises some interesting points (some I disagree with, but I respect his pov nonetheless): http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jonathan-daniel-harris/why-im-almost-vegetarian_b_210472.html
Fancier lunch carts are popping up everywhere and I think they are a great idea for affordable fast food. I think it’s also a way to make meat-free food more accessible. You walk by the cart and see something that catches your eye you’ll stop and buy it and not even realize it is vegetarian. The Wall Street Journal did a good article on food carts today though I wish they would have played up the organic/meat-free choices more: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204456604574201934018170554.html
Ever wonder how much the people who pick your fruit and vegetables get paid. I assume in certain countries it’s barely enough to live on. Unfortunately they aren’t doing much better here, but they are doing better today than they were yesterday. I’m not sure why prisoners’ meals fascinate me, but they do. When I was in college I actually went into a prison and did a story on a Sheriff who was trying to restrict calories. I did a standup holding a tray of their franks and beans. Well now in Georgia they are doing a similar thing, but it’s to save money. Some inmates will now great brunch. Sounds good, but it’s not as fancy as you think. Take a look: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iuiMA5jtXxR5zuz9uMoG5uG4D0SwD98KCH2G0
Don’t eat meat? Think you have to avoid bbq? Think again!!! I eat at bbq restaurants all the time. A little mac and cheese, a little grilled veg, some veg chili…yes there are options. Here’s even more: http://www.canada.com/Health/vegetarian+survives+barbecue+season/1666654/story.html
The Sour Move of the Day goes to the Canadian Government for still allowing the senseless killing of seals. Honestly when will it end? I just think anyone with a heart would want this to stop. Only monsters would club cute, fuzzy seals and I’m sorry but the people who let it happen aren’t much better. Well now Peta is taking things a step further. First there was a boycott of Canadian seafood, now they’ve extended that to be a boycott of Canadian maple syrup. So sign this petition and only buy syrup from the U.S. I recently picked up some great local maple syrup at the Union Square Green Market. It’s a good way to support your local farmers and boycott Canada: https://secure.peta.org/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=2209
