“The Biggest Loser” is one of my favorite shows on TV. As I sat down to watch this week’s episode though I just couldn’t get something from last week’s episode out of my head. I think it was “the big loser moment” of the season and I don’t mean loser in a good way here. On April 14th’s episode Jillian Michaels, the kick-butt female trainer on the show, did one of the show’s “trainer tips” about drinking milk. I totally understand that certain products sponsor shows now. I get it. I’m in the broadcasting business. I understand that spotlighting certain brands within shows (rather than during commercials) is the future of advertising. “American Idol” has been doing it for years by having their Coke cups prominently displayed. I even let “The Biggest Loser” get by with often mentioning Extra gum and how chewing it curbs cravings, yada, yada, yada. What bothered me about this “milk tip” is that Jillian said milk is part of a balanced diet and she mentioned drinking up to three glasses a day is good. Uh what? Since when? Jillian gets mad if someone wants to eat anything remotely fatty, but she is promoting milk? She didn’t even say to drink low-fat or skim milk, she just said drink milk. An 8-ounce serving of milk has 150 calorie and 8.5 grams of fat in it. So drink three glasses and your looking at 450 calories and 25.5 grams of fat. This totally seems to go against everything Jillian preaches. I like Jillian, I really do. I just have to imagine behind the scenes she put up some sort of protest against doing this “ad”. If she did fight, it’s obviously a battle she lost. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb here by guessing that the reason she lost (if that is the case) is because $$ was involved. I want to stress though again that it’s not that the whole “sponsorship” thing that bothers me. Heck they promote “Subway” ever so often, but usually they point out how to build a healthy sub there. The milk thing just boggles my mind. Couldn’t they find a sponsor more conducive to the show? What’s funny is on this week’s episode, April 21st, Bob did his “trainer tip” on eating soy. There was a big glass of soy milk right in front of him. Ironic they did this just a week later. Of course I am thrilled they are promoting soy because I think this is the smart alternative to milk. Guess what though? Bob didn’t mention that you should drink three cups of it!!! I don’t think most trainers would ever recommend drinking three of any beverage in one day, except for water (oh yeah Biggest Loser promotes this with their Brita sponsorship). Later in the show the contestants were told to make food journals. Now that’s a good “trainer tip”, but I’d really love to see if any of them put down that they are drinking three glasses of milk in there. Hmmmm I don’t think so!
