I just watched “Twilight” on DVD and as a foodie I left the movie wanting to do a little more research on…no not Robert Pattinson (well actually I did that too). Actually the first thing I looked into was whether the vampires can eat and why these characters call themselves “Vegetarian Vampires”. Turns out they can’t consume real food at all. So blood it is! Why do they call themselves vegetarian though? Sure they don’t drink human blood, but uh they feast on animal blood. HELLO! This obviously means they aren’t vegetarians. So I’m not sure why the author of the books decided to go with that term, but it sure isn’t accurate. How could a vampire ever be a vegetarian when all they want to do is “suck your blood”? This all does lead me to wonder what other movie characters are eating and what THEY SHOULD be eating. Take Spider-Man for instance. Tobey Maguire is a vegetarian in real life, but in the world of Peter Parker would he crave insects? Hmmm maybe something they should consider in the next installment. What would be very interesting though is if he had the craving for bugs, but resisted it because he’s a vegetarian. Could open up quite a dilemma for Spidey. Another super hero is in the same predicament. If Batman has bat characteristics then he too would want to eat insects. We never really see The Dark Knight eat, but in real life Christian Bale is also a vegetarian so it would be interesting to see what Bruce Wayne eats. His butler seems to bring him food sometimes, but he always turns it down. Okay enough with the male characters. What about some great female ones? Actually I’ll start with a not-so-great female character and why being a vegetarian would have made the movie more interesting. I know the suspense is killing you. Well I’m talking about Nicole Kidman’s character in Australia. You didn’t see it? You aren’t alone. The movie wasn’t exactly a blockbuster and there a lot of bad reviews, but I saw it and I’d say there were some good parts and there were some bad parts. Hugh Jackman plays Drover, a man whose job it is to move cattle around. He falls in love with a woman who’s quite the opposite of him, Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman). With all the differences between them, him poor/her rich, him rugged/her perfectly put together, wouldn’t it have been a hoot if she didn’t eat meat and he was obviously Mr. Meat Eater? It could have added a little more real humor to the movie and not all the forced humor you felt early on in the movie. Next up, in “Legally Blonde” Elle says she is a vegetarian, but you don’t really see her eat much. Inquiring minds want to know what kind of food she partakes in. Here’s an idea for “Legally Blonde” Part III: Elle goes to a restaurant with all meat dishes and requests a vegetarian meal and the Chef turns his nose up to her. Of course she won’t stand for that so she makes it her mission to bring vegetarian food to the masses. She goes to a factory farm and exposes the horrors, etc. Sounds good to me. I’ll get cracking on that screenplay “like yesterday you know?”
