A new restaurant in my neighborhood is going to open it’s doors soon. Right off the bat you may be thinking a new restaurant opening in this economy, huh? Well wait until you hear this: The rent on the space at 240 Central Park South is said to be a quarter of a million dollars a year. So how can anyone afford $750,000 a year in rent? I mean wouldn’t diners have to shell out a whole lot of money for you to make a profit with sky-high rent? Well word on the street is the owners of “Marea” think they can handle it. The restaurant, set to open in May, is owned and operated by Chef Michael White and his partner Chris Cannon. The owners of Midtown East’s “Alto” reportedly say this menu will feature high-end Italian seafood. I haven’t seen the menu or prices, but I’m assuming they’ll have to be pretty high and I’m betting the restaurant will feature a pretty pricey wine list. The restaurant that used to occupy this space was “San Domenico”. After 20 years of doing business there though the owners realized the rent was just too high for them so they moved out and moved downtown. Now as I walk by this space everyday I see builders moving new things in. I want good restaurants to succeed and to be honest I have to applaud the owners of Marea for taking a risk now. Just think dozens of people will have jobs because of this opening. Let’s just hope the food will be worth it and that people will want to return and shell out money. Enough money to keep a restaurant with ridiculous rent open for the long run.
